Pre-owned charms are often cheaper, but they're sold as seen: hollow designs can be thinned or dented, split rings can be worn, and hallmarks can be rubbed illegible or invalidated by past repairs. The number refers to how much pure gold is in the metal: 9ct is 37.5% pure gold, 14ct is 58.5%, and 18ct is 75%. Higher purity means a richer yellow colour but also a softer, more expensive metal. For charms, 9ct gold offers the best balance — it's the most durable of the three, the most affordable, and still has a beautiful warm gold tone. It's also the most popular gold purity in the UK, which is why the vast majority of our charm collection is 9ct.

Yes — 9ct gold is actually the most durable gold purity available. Because it contains a higher proportion of alloy metals alongside the pure gold, it's harder and more resistant to scratches and dents than 14ct or 18ct gold. That makes it an excellent choice for charms, which tend to move around on a bracelet and knock against each other during everyday wear.

Absolutely. 9ct gold is hard-wearing and resistant to tarnishing, so it's well suited to daily wear. Just slip your charm bracelet off before heavy manual work, swimming in chlorinated water, or applying hand cream and cleaning products. With a little common sense, your charms will keep their colour and shine for years.

9ct gold is low-maintenance compared to most metals, but a little care goes a long way. Wipe your charms with a soft cloth after wearing to remove oils and moisture. Store them in a jewellery box or pouch when you're not wearing them, and avoid contact with perfume, hairspray and cleaning products. If they need a deeper clean, warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid and a soft brush will do the job — just dry them thoroughly afterwards.

9ct gold is well tolerated by most people and is considered a safe choice for sensitive skin. It doesn't contain nickel, which is the most common cause of jewellery-related irritation. If you've had reactions to cheaper metals in the past, solid 9ct gold is a reliable step up.

Our gold charms come with an open jump ring. These would need soldering by a local jeweller to attach to an existing bracelet. If you are purchasing a bracelet from us at the same time, we can attach charms to it for you - just let us know in the order notes as you purchase. We can also provide 9ct gold split rings (similar to a keyring, but much smaller) that will allow attachment to charms without soldering. Please get in touch if you would like a split ring to be included on your order - there is a charge for these.

Some of our charms allow this where there is space. Look for the 'Personalisation' label, or the 'Add Personalisation' button on the product page. You will be able to add text or a monogram and choose a font. We can also offer image engraving for simple logos and motifs. Our standard shipping (Royal Mail Tracked 48) usually takes around 2-3 days. We offer an upgraded shipping service, (Royal Mail Tracked 24), which takes 1-2 days. These timings are just estimates, however.
If you need your item urgently, we also offer Next Working Day shipping, which will guarantee your item will arrive next day, Mon-Sat. You will need to be in to sign for your order in this case.
