What does wearing a St Christopher mean? +

Many people gift them to loved ones embarking on trips, gap years, or new life chapters. For more information, read our blog post "What does a St Christopher Symbolise?"

Can you wear a St Christopher necklace if you're not religious? +

Absolutely. While St Christopher has roots in Christian tradition, many people wear a St Christopher necklace simply as a symbol of protection and safe travels — regardless of their faith or beliefs. It's one of the most universally recognised symbols of looking after the people you care about, and that meaning resonates whether you're religious or not. There's no right or wrong reason to wear one.

What does St Christopher protect you against? +

St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers. According to tradition, he carried the Christ child across a dangerous river, and since then he's been associated with protection during journeys — whether by car, plane, train or on foot. People wear a St Christopher for safe travels, but more broadly it's seen as a symbol of protection and looking out for someone, which is why they're so popular as gifts for loved ones heading off on new adventures.

Does the Catholic Church still consider St Christopher a saint? +

This is a common misconception. St Christopher was never formally 'de-sainted' — he was removed from the universal liturgical calendar in 1969 because there isn't strong historical evidence of his life, but he remains a recognised saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is still celebrated on 25th July, and he continues to be one of the most popular patron saints worldwide. The tradition of wearing a St Christopher for protection is as strong as ever.

Is a St Christopher necklace a good gift? +

It's one of the most meaningful gifts you can give. A St Christopher is traditionally given to wish someone safe travels and protection — making it a thoughtful choice for birthdays, graduations, gap years, new jobs, or anyone heading off on a big adventure. It's the kind of gift people keep and wear for years because of what it represents. Add an engraving on the back with a date or personal message and it becomes something truly special.

Can I get my St Christopher necklace engraved? +

What's the difference between 9ct gold and sterling silver St Christopher necklaces? +

9ct gold is more durable, hypoallergenic, and holds its colour longer, but comes at a higher price point. Sterling silver offers the same quality craftsmanship at a more accessible price, though it may tarnish over time and requires occasional polishing.

Are your St Christophers Hallmarked? +

All our St Christophers that are above the legal hallmarking weight will contain a UK hallmark. This limit is 7.78g for sterling silver and 1g for 9ct gold. You may also see other marks such as .925, or .375. These all relate to the metal purity - they aren't a hall mark as such, but simply show the purity of the metal. '375' is found on some 9ct Gold items and refers to '37.5% pure gold' - the definition of 9ct Gold. '925' is found on on some sterling silver pieces and refers to '92.5% pure silver' - the definition of sterling silver.

You may see a few = different symbols in our hallmarks. These are: the sponsor’s mark, millesimal fineness mark and the assay office mark. 'JB', the sponsors mark, refers to us - our parent company Jewellerybox ltd.
The fineness mark, is likely either '375' or '925' for our St Christophers, as all are either 9ct gold, or sterling silver. Finally, the assay office mark - this refers to the Assay Office that hallmarked the item. We use the Edinburgh assay office, which has a stamp of a three-towered castle. There are Assay offices in Sheffield, Birmingham and London which all have different stamps.

Read our Hallmarking page to find out more.

Are St Christopher necklaces only for men? +

No - St Christopher necklaces are unisex. We offer various sizes from delicate pendants suitable for anyone, to larger statement pieces. The meaning behind St Christopher transcends gender.

Can I wear my St Christopher in the shower or pool? +

Sterling silver St Christophers are best removed before showering, as soaps and shampoos can accelerate tarnishing.
